In a thrilling gold medal final against France, the women’s 3×3 Basketball team from the United States were crowned champions of the 2023 FIBA 3×3 World Cup.
The United States’ women’s 3×3 basketball team is back on top of the sport for the first time since 2014 after winning the 2023 FIBA 3×3 World Cup held in Vienna, Austria from May 30 to June 4.
Team USA’s third gold medal in the event comes after defeating the defending champions from France in an exhilarating final with that ended in a 16-12 victory for the U.S. squad. The championship title marks the first time the U.S. has reached the podium in the worldwide tournament since 2016 when it earned the bronze medal.
The women’s team for the U.S. won the first two editions of the world championship in 2012 and 2014 before adding a bronze in 2016. However, the world’s basketball power couldn’t reach the medal round in the last four championships until finally breaking through in Vienna this week.
Team USA was led in this year’s tournament by the 2023 World Cup MVP Cameron Brink as well as stars Hailey Van Lith and Cierra Burdick. Brink put together an inspiring performance throughout the championships, notching a total of 39 points throughout all of the matches. Meanwhile, Van Lith was the social media star for her great dribbling, passing and shooting performances throughout the World Cup.
The U.S. nearly completed the gold medal sweep at the championships, with the men’s team also competing in the final against the powerhouse from Serbia. In the end, the Serbian team proved too powerful and pulled away for the gold in a final score of 21-19 to earn their historic seventh championship in the sport.
Only the U.S. and Qatar have managed to earn the gold medal in the history of the 3×3 World Cup, with the U.S. claiming its gold in 2016 and Qatar in 2014. Team USA’s silver this weekend in Austria marks its second silver all-time and third total medal at the World Cup.
Brazil’s men’s team also competed for a medal at the 2023 tournament but came up short in the bronze medal match against Latvia in a final score of 21-12. The men’s team from the United States remains the only country from the Americas to medal in the 3×3 World Cup since its inception in 2012.
