Ryanair's Latest SAF Purchase Will Offset CO2 From 100 Dublin-Vienna Flights

The carrier has partnered with OMV to seal the deal. Ryanair has announced a 500-tonne purchase of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from 100 Dublin-Vienna Flights, with the help of Austrian petrochemical company OMV. The agreement will reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by more than 1,250 tonnes, representing a considerable offset. Ryanair has also made a strong commitment to SAF usage in Europe, with its flights out of Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS) being powered by a 40% SAF blend since April 1st, 2023. The carrier is also working towards 12.5% SAF usage by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2030, while its new 737 MAX series aircraft offer a 16% emissions reduction.

Ryanair has increased its sustainability commitments by announcing a 500-tonne purchase of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The Irish low-cost carrier has teamed up with OMV to make the agreement possible, and it stands to save enough carbon dioxide through the use of the fuel to offset 100 flights from Vienna to Dublin.

In a statement circulated by Ryanair today, the airline confirmed that this batch of SAF alone will reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by more than 1,250 tonnes, representing a considerable offset. This isn't the first time that it has partnered with Austrian petrochemical company OMV, as it also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the company last year. OMV's Martijn van Koten stated:

"We are building a growth business for SAF to support the industry’s journey towards a more sustainable future. We are proud of our partnership with Ryanair that allows both companies to leverage their expertise in promoting the use of SAF. This facilitates the transition towards the application of more sustainable forms of energy and helps reduce the climate impact of aviation."

The aforementioned MoU has seen OMV set aside 160,000 metric tonnes of SAF, which Ryanair will have exclusive access to purchase until 2030. Needless to say, this gives the carrier the option to offset the carbon dioxide emissions from a great many more of its flights out of Vienna International Airport (VIE).

Committed to SAF usage all over Europe

According to Ryanair, OMV has the "ambition to become a regional leader in the supply of SAF." Its partnership with the carrier will play a key role in establishing its presence in the market, particularly as it is working with the airline in multiple countries. Indeed, as Ryanair's Head of Sustainability Steven Fitzgerald notes:

"SAF plays a key role in our Pathway to Net Zero decarbonization strategy, in which we have committed to increasing our use of SAF over the coming years – a commitment that this deal with OMV will help move further forward. OMV is a key partner for Ryanair in Austria, Germany and Romania and we look forward to growing this partnership as Europe’s largest airline Group."

Elsewhere in Europe, Ryanair has also made a strong commitment to SAF usage regarding its flights out of Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS). As Simple Flying reported earlier this year, all of the Irish low-cost carrier's flights out of the Dutch capital have been powered by a 40% SAF blend since April 1st, 2023.

The carrier has many sustainability initiatives

Ryanair also used today's announcement as an opportunity to highlight its various existing sustainability initiatives. As it works towards 12.5% SAF usage by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2030, the carrier is reducing its emissions through the implementation of its new Boeing 737 MAX series aircraft.

Its existing 737 MAX 8-200 jets, which it calls 'Gamechangers,' offer a 16% emissions reduction, while its future 737 MAX 10 fleet will see this figure rise to 20% while also offering a 21% capacity increase. Alongside its SAF and fleet renewal initiatives, it has also "advanced these commitments by partnering with Trinity College Dublin to open the Ryanair Sustainable Aviation Research Centre."
