The Hamburg native recently lost his first match in Tokyo and Shanghai. Despite a crowd at the Vienna Stadthalle that was supportive of Ofner's performance, he managed to secure a win with a score of 6:4, 6:1. Zvereve, ranked tenth in the world rankings, will next face Cameron Norrie or Filip Misolich in the round of 16. AAlexander Zverev won a match on the ATP tour for the first time in three weeks. The Olympic tennis champion confidently defeated local hero Sebastian Ofner in Vienna with a score of 6:4, 6:1 and reached the 1/8 finals. The Hamburg native recently lost his first match in Tokyo and Shanghai.
Zverev also played against a crowd at the Vienna Stadthalle that was loudly supportive of Ofner. But the tenth in the world rankings kept his nerves against the number 44: a break to 4:3 opened the way to victory in the first set, in the second round Zverev then won 13 rallies in a row and converted his first match point after 1:17 hours.
Zverev and Ofner had previously only met at Grand Slam tournaments. Zverev also won Wimbledon in 2017 and Paris in 2022 without dropping a set. The German, who won the title in the Austrian capital in 2021, will face Cameron Norrie (Great Britain) or Filip Misolich (Austria) in the round of 16.
Zverev is also fighting in Vienna for extra points to qualify for the ATP season finals among the top eight players in Turin (from November 13). He is currently in seventh place in the Race.
